When you get that big positive, your mind swims.
At some point soon after, you may start thinking about what you’re going to need for the new baby. There are quite a few basic categories and things you’re going to begin to picture: cribs, nursery décor, car seats, stroller, etc.
Even most first-time parents have a basic idea of what they will need to have in their home before the big day. Then you go to your first ultrasound—and your whole world is turned upside down again when you see that second heartbeat.
This makes things a lot different—and after the initial shock has worn off, at some point, you will start wondering exactly what, and how much, stuff you are going to need to accommodate two babies. Two whole babies! How is that even going to work?
Well, I’m here to say—it just does, and there are products out there to make it a lot easier!
We have compiled a list of some of the best items for parents of twins. These are either made just for twins or come in very handy when dealing with two babies.
One baby changes your life—two babies—at the same time, well—everything you were going to do for one baby you’re going to be doing twice!
Timesavers are of the essence, but quality, safety (of course), and affordability are, like buying for one, also very important qualities to look for in products for twins. Did I say affordability?
Twin products are great because they are almost always less expensive than buying two of something (which you, of course, will).
1. Graco Duo Glider Click Connect Double Stroller
If you’re wondering how you’re going to cart two babies around and still be able to get anything done, wonder no more. This stroller is so easy to handle.
It folds and unfolds in a snap. It’s lightweight but sturdy, and compact enough to fit in the back of the van or car trunk. It is compatible with any Graco SnugRide Click Connect car seat. Just take them out of the car and click them right onto the stroller—no extra steps.
Another great thing about this stroller is that when they grow out of their rear-facing infant seats, it converts into a regular double stroller, with reclining seats, canopies, and footrests. With some of the click-ons, you wind up having to buy a new stroller once they grow out of their seats, but not so with this one.
This stroller is a timesaver, a back saver, and at a reasonable price, it is a money saver! This is one of the least expensive options for this type of stroller, and also one of the best.
2. Arm’s Reach Ideal Ezee™ 3-in-1 Co-Sleeper® Bassinet
The perfect sleeping area for your newborns can be one of the most difficult purchases you can make.
There are the regular questions such as whether it is made out of the safest materials, whether it is comfortable and safe for the baby, and also if it is convenient to use.
However, with twins, there are more questions, such as whether to place them apart or together, whether to buy one or two bassinets, and, if buying only one, how much weight it will hold.
Twin births are often, but not always, C-section births. In this case, another factor is ease of lifting the babies in and out without discomfort or injury.
If one chooses to place their newborns together, the Arm’s Reach Ideal Ezee 3-in-1 is a great choice.
There is plenty of room for your tinies to sleep safely (until they start to move around more, which is the point in which it is time to switch to the crib anyway). The weight limit is more than adequate for housing two babies and it is very sturdy.
The co-sleeping option consists of one side that folds down enough to attach to your own bed with the base at only a little higher level than your bed.
This creates a barrier between you and the babies, for safety, but makes it very easy to lift them in and out of it with ease in those first weeks after delivery. It also allows you to be (safely) as close to your babies as possible without actually placing them in your bed.
Speaking of safety, the Ideal Ezee has plenty of ventilation for breathability. The instructions are easy to follow and it is collapsible and portable. The side can be folded back up and double as a free-standing bassinet, or triple as a pack and play once the babies grow out of sleeping in the top “bunk.”
For those who are looking for organic options, Arms Reach does have this option in their accessories section. It is called the Au Natural and it is made with organic cotton, wool, and natural latex. The downside is that it costs almost as much as the sleeper itself, but if this is an important factor to you, it is available. They also sell organic cotton sheets.
The Ideal Ezee is a pretty good buy for a reasonable price, but it can sometimes be found on sale, as it is sold in various online outlets. Even if this twin baby product costs a little more than the average bassinet, it does save you that expense in the long run.
If you would rather place the babies in separate sleepers, Arms Reach does have the Mini Ezee in a 2-in-1 (not a pack and play), and the 3-in-1 pack and play. However, the Mini 3-in-1 doesn’t cost any less than the Ideal, and the 2-in-1 doesn’t cost much less. Whatever size or sleep arrangement decision you make, though, they are great sleepers.
3. Swaddle UP by Love To Dream
This product is not made exclusively for twins, but it is the BEST thing you can buy if you, like most of us, enjoy sleeping a little bit!
It’s hard to tell which is more exhausting—two babies who won’t sleep, or babies who won’t sleep at the same time. The latter can cause some very sleepless nights (and days), for sure.
Swaddling helps, but it is a skill—you either have it or you don’t. The nurses make it look easy in the hospital. You get home, and the babies are having none of it. This product not only makes swaddling easy—the babies seem to like it a lot better than the traditional way.
It doubles as a wearable blanket—it just zips right up, eliminating the danger of the swaddle coming undone and the blanket covering the babies’ heads or faces. It allows their little legs to move freely, while providing the stability of swaddling—eliminating that startle reflex for uninterrupted sleep.
Instead of over their chests, their arms are placed reaching above their heads, which some say is a more natural sleep position for babies.
It also allows them to suck on their fingers or touch their faces, which some say helps them to sleep better, as well. Their hands are covered, though, which prevents them from scratching their faces in their sleep.
Some parents boast 6-8 hour nights with the use of this, where they were getting 3 hours, tops, before. It is a really great, safe, option for a better night’s sleep—for everyone!
It is important, though, to watch for when the babies start to roll over. The Swaddle UP cannot be used after this.
If you choose to continue using one after this point, however, the Swaddle UP 50/50 has removable sleeves in which you can either take one or both sleeves off of the sack when the time comes.
Overall, this is a great product, and at a reasonable price, it is worth every penny.
4. Twin Z Nursing Pillow
Breastfeeding twins is a challenge.
Whether you feed them separately or at the same time—anything that can help will be very much appreciated. There are quite a few feeding pillows out there such as the My Brest Friend Feeding Pillow, but the Twin Z Nursing Pillow is really great for twins. Click here to see a side by side comparison to determine which is nursing pillow will suit you best.
It is built slightly indented where the babies lie upon it, which helps to keep them from rolling off. It wraps all the way around with an adjustable belt, with a small lower back support area. There are pockets to keep whatever you may need beside you. It is big enough for twins, but not super bulky.
At a reasonable price, it is a good and useful buy. If you can figure out how to feed two at once, it is great for you, your back, and your schedule.
5. Table For Two
One of the first pieces of advice parents of twins give to expecting twin parents is, “Make sure they both eat at the same time or you will be feeding them all day long.” Propping them up on a regular pillow can get awkward and messy. This product is a great alternative.
Table For Two is a nice, comfortable place for babies to have their meals.
It features washable inserts, bottle holders on the sides, the perfect angle for feeding, and even armrests for you! This is the Cadillac of twin bottle-feeding!
However, the price is also the Cadillac of twin bottle-feeding. This twin baby product is very nice, but not the most affordable option. If this is a little too much for your pocketbook to consider, an extremely viable alternative is something you will probably need anyway—two of them, in fact. This being the:
6. Fisher Price Musical Friends Bouncer
We chose this bouncer, but any bouncers will work for the purpose at hand. They also sit at a nice angle for feeding. Scoot them close together and you have a great feeding station for two babies!
They may not have the armrest or the bottle holders—but they also don’t carry this cost. This bouncer is not the least expensive of bouncers, but it is one of the least expensive options for vibrating, music, and toy options.
It features easily washable fabric, bouncy comfort for the babies, and a removable play rack that features music, colorful lights, and hanging toys.
These aren’t just great for feeding, they are also portable and lightweight, and so you can take them anywhere. Some babies like being bounced lightly to sleep. These can work very well when you have two sleepy babies and only one adult around to help them lull off.
Bouncy seats can be one of the least expensive and most useful things you can purchase for your babies. There are numerous types and colors, with various features and prices, but they are definitely something you’re going to want to own, even if you can afford the Table For Two.
Choosing everything you need for one baby can be a daunting experience, let alone two. One of the first things that can flash into mind once we find out twins are on the way is, “Two of everything! This is going to be expensive!”
Well, to be honest—it is going to be more expensive than a singleton, but there are many affordable options out there, as well as products made for twins that are not only very convenient, but you only have to purchase one.
Putting together a gift registry can help narrow things down, especially since most registry sites have everything split into the different categories you will need to look at, as well as product suggestions.
You may not go with all, or even any, of these products, but it can help give you an idea of what you are looking for. Advice from other twin parents can help greatly, as well, whether you find them through an online resource or have some around you can seek out.
It is so much fun to watch your nursery fill up with baby stuff! One final key to a successful search is to enjoy it! Part of the fun is picturing your new babies in their new stroller, cribs, etc., as they appear one by one—or in this case, often, two by two! Happy searching!
